Can Gluten-Free Diet Be Used for Weight Loss Plan?

We’ve discussed about what a gluten-free diet is in the previous article. But still, you have that one question left hanging, needing for answer; whether or not gluten-free diet can be used for weight loss plan.

Okay, let’s do the recap first. Basically, a gluten-free diet is a diet that excludes the protein gluten which can be found in grains such as wheat, barley, rye, and a cross between wheat and rye called triticale. A gluten-free diet is primarily used to treat celiac disease. It is an autoimmune disease where the body reacts negatively to gluten. Eating a gluten-free diet helps people with celiac disease control their signs and symptoms and prevent complications.

Now the big question is: can gluten-free diet be used for weight loss plan? With all of the hype around gluten-free foods, many believe going "g-free" can help shed some extra pounds.

Some celebrities endorse going gluten-free for weight loss, but the truth is this weight loss is often due to cutting out an entire food group (such as breads and cereals). That means they’re eating fewer calories, which naturally leads to weight loss -- but it’s not because they’ve cut out gluten. Many unhealthy foods contain gluten, like fried foods with breading and certain desserts. So by going gluten-free you will naturally be eating a healthier diet.

If weight loss is your goal (and if you don’t need to go gluten-free because of celiac disease or gluten intolerance), try focusing on your portion sizes instead. For lunch or dinner, half of your plate should be made up of vegetables or salad, a quarter should be protein and a quarter carbohydrates.

The key is to make conscious choices about eating whole, real foods and getting produce without pesticides, and meat without hormones and antibiotics. If you need to go gluten-free, consult your doctor or a nutritionist to determine the best eating plan for your lifestyle, but in general, select more fruits, vegetables, lean meat and more naturally gluten-free grains, like brown rice or quinoa.

All in all, if you want to lose weight, you should focus on creating a calorie deficit while eating a variety of organic, nutritious foods and exercising regularly in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle instead of cutting out an entire nutrient in your diet, such as gluten.
