7 Ideas to Do with Leftover Rice

It’s really easy to accidentally make too much rice and have it end up in the garbage the next day. Fortunately, with the right technique, it's possible to turn your leftover rice into something wonderful. Plus, using leftovers can have a huge impact on your budget. Here’re 7 helpful ideas to do with your leftover rice:

Turn It into Fried Rice
This is my favorite one. You all know that leftover or day-old rice is actually the most ideal for making fried rice because the grains are slightly more firm and less likely to get sticky and gummy when stirred in with sauce or other ingredients. So, toss into a skillet whatever vegetables you have in your fridge, a scrambled egg, add your leftover rice, and drizzle them with a delicious sauce. Breakfast is ready to be served.

Burger Bun Substitute
Compress cooked white rice into round patties and sear them in a hot, oiled pan to get nice and crunchy on the outside, but still fluffy on the inside. Use them to sandwich anything from a juicy hamburger to crispy fried chicken. Simple yet unique.

Put It in a Salad
Rice is the perfect addition to any salad, as it soaks up the flavors of the dressing without turning gluggy.

Wrap It
Wrapping is a fantastic way to make the most of leftover rice. You can wrap it in seaweed with some tuna, chicken and vegetables to make sushi or California rolls, or put it between some cabbage leaves to make some Greek-style dolmades.

Make Pudding
Heat rice with some milk or cream in a small pot until the rice is tender and the milk has thickened, add sweetener and fresh fruit, and voila, you've got rice pudding.

Make Fritters
This works best with leftover short- to medium-grain risotto rice since its starchy, sticky quality helps keep things together. Mix some leftover rice with a beaten egg, some cubes of quick-melt cheese, and a mix of finely chopped onion, garlic, and herbs. Heat some oil in a skillet and fry up little patties of rice until they become toasty fritters, pressing them into the pan to create extra crispiness. Eat with soy sauce and sliced scallions.

Freeze It
Having single portions of cooked rice stashed in the freezer makes last minute meals really easy. A quick microwave and you’re on your way. So, pack up your rice and freeze it for later use.
